Getting OnTime Setup Today
OnTime Mobile supports several standards in mobiles devices today. Each mobile device has its advantages and drawbacks. No doubt price and availability will affect the mobile devices you choose to use with OnTime and because of that we have endeavored to make OnTime Mobile work with the widest range of devices.
Pocket PC Support
The best experience with OnTime Mobile is when used with a Pocket PC enabled device. This can be either a PDA or a Pocket PC enabled phone. The larger screen makes it easier to see larger amounts of information at once and the touch screen makes it easy to navigate across data. Using the touch screen, drivers can capture digital signatures. Probably the largest advantage to using this type of device is database support. When used with a Pocket PC device, OnTime Mobile will run a database on the device with a copy of the server's data. This make it possible to work online or offline, perfect when using a regular PDA without internet connection or when drifting in and out of cell range. The built-in keyboard on these devices also makes it easier to enter text, something that is difficult and time consuming on a numeric keypad.
WAP Support
Virtually every cell phone on the market today support WAP, which basically enables you to surf the Internet on your phone. Even "free" phones have this feature. OnTime Mobile supports the 10 major variations of WAP that is employed in cell phones today, including those used in Asia and Europe.
Although you can count on OnTime Mobile to work with any WAP enabled device, there are drawbacks to this method of access. Since there is no offline capabilities in WAP, you will need to have an internet connection each and every time you want to look at or refresh data. This can pose a problem in areas that have poor cell reception. Often times cell providers will allow you to test the coverage area for a period of a week or so before you commit. Take advantage of this opportunity to test the phone you plan to use in areas where you commonly work to check data and voice reception.
Pager Support
In some areas, pagers are still the most reliable method of communication. Although pagers are far more limited in what they are capable of doing, OnTime can still push out notifications and messages to them. OnTime Mobile has rich support for SMS text messaging and that same feature can be used to send messages to pagers instead. In the case of two-way pagers, dispatchers will want to have to confirmation notifications sent to an email address they have access to in order to check that the pager did indeed receive the message from OnTime.
